WHSmith Priviledge Club

Last week we popped into WHSmith and I asked the checkout assistant to check the balance on my WHSmith clubcard. She told me that the Clubcards are being phased out and it's time to use up any remaining credit, because it won't be valid for long (I think she said it's OK until the end of February).

The clubcard scheme is being replaced with the WHSmith Priviledge Club. Details on the website are sketchy, but it seems to be an email newsletter with benefits. You get £20 of coupons when you sign up and £10 a month of coupons after that. There's a space on the application form to put in your old Clubcard number, but it's unclear whether there's any benefit to you in doing so.

I signed up and it took a couple of days for me to receive my £20 of coupons - you get a link to a PDF file of printable vouchers. They're all of the 'Save £x when you spend £y on blah' type, for in-store use only and valid until the end of February.

With the last posting dates (for UK mail) rapidly approaching, it's time to send out the last of the Christmas cards. But what if you don't want to waste all that paper, or you've missed someone off the list and need to get a card out to them nearer Christmas? Then e-cards come to the rescue! There are lots of free e-cards available, and you can even support charities by sending e-cards.

According to Friends of the Earth, over 200,000 trees are cut down to provide our Christmas cards. They have a selection of Christmas e-cards available for free, from traditional festive scenes to ones with a more environmental slant.

If you're looking for a last minute, paper-free present, then pop along to Oxfam Unwrapped. Their gifts help people in the developing world. Normally your gift recepient recieves a fridge magnet and a card, describing the gift. Last posting date for that option is 22nd December. For last minute, overseas, or ultra environmentally-friendly gifts, you can choose their e-card option.

Highlight the work of Macmillan Cancer Support by sending out one of their Christmas e-cards, and sending a free e-card via Care2 helps to save the rainforest. If you have a favourite charity, check their website to see whether they have e-cards you can send. And if you know of a good e-card site then leave the address in the comments!

There are a lot of websites that sell more high-tech e-cards, with animations and music. If you want to send a really cute card then have a look at Forever Friends. They have some free animated e-cards that you can send out, as well as ones you can buy. For every card you send, you'll earn points that you can spend on cards in the future.

And don't forget to recycle your paper Christmas cards in the New Year.

Join the worm survey team

Next spring, Opal are running an earthworm survey - and they need help from amateur scientists. The idea is to build a picture of soil quality and earthworm populations across the country.

I've mentioned Zinio before, as one of the places where you can read magazines online for free, and this morning they've sent me an email about a new feature - Zinio Inside.

Zinio Inside lets you search through the online editions of all of their magazines. It brings up a list of the issues which contain your search words, and you can then read the pages it has found. You can even print them out and bookmark the links so you can find the pages again later, or share them with friends.

You can flip through the magazines and read a few more pages too, but there is a limit to how many pages it will show you for free in each issue.

Get free stamps with the Royal Mail Surveys System

I've been a Royal Mail surveys panellist for months now. Every week they send me a package with two or three envelopes which I have to mail out at specific times over the week. There's a certain amount of assembly to do - sticking labels, occasionally writing out addresses, and then sealing the envelopes up.

At the same time I receive test mail items most days myself, and enter the details on the survey website. That only takes a couple of minutes each time.

For this, each panellist is rewarded with postage stamps each month - a book of 12 1st class stamps, and a book of 6 1st class large letter stamps. There's also prize draws, with shopping vouchers being sent to panellists randomly drawn from those that log into the website each day.

And you can sometimes earn more shopping vouchers by participating in another kind of mail survey, recording how many items of post you receive each day for a couple of weeks, together with any items that have been incorrectly delivered.

All in all, it's a rewarding survey panel to participate in, with a regular pay-out and very little effort involved.
